Atopic Dermatitis Snapshot

Overview

Atopic dermatitis (also known as eczema) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes inflammation, redness, and irritation of the skin. Although usually beginning in childhood, anyone can get the disease at any age.

Specialty Impact

Presentation

Atopic dermatitis causes extremely itchy skin. Scratching the itchy skin can lead to:

redness
swelling
cracking
appearance of clear fluid
crusting
scaling

Symptoms can flare in multiple areas of the body at the same time and then go into remission. The appearance and location of the rash can vary depending on age.

Diagnostic Testing

Patch testing - Generally performed if the physician suspects that allergic contact dermatitis is contributing to the rash. The physician applies small amounts of different substances to a patient's skin. During the next few days, the physician examines the skin for signs of a reaction. Patch testing can help diagnose specific types of allergies causing the dermatitis.
