New Toolkit Helps Diagnose and Treat Sepsis
The Royal College of Physicians and The UK Sepsis Trust developed a new toolkit to ensure that doctors better identify and treat sepsis.
According to experts, sepsis is not diagnosed in time to treat patients with antibiotics resulting in approximately 37,000 cases of mortality (from heart attack or stroke) in the UK every year.

“Acute Medical Units are key to the rapid identification and treatment of this killer condition. As a core part of our suite of toolkits and our wider work with NHS England, this toolkit will help us to save an extra 12,500 lives every year in the UK,” said Ron Daniels, MD, the toolkit author and chair of The UK Sepsis Trust.
Daniels and colleagues developed the toolkit for acute care awards. The tools include:
- Sepsis recognition
- Healthcare options
- Who makes the care pathway decision
- Who to screen for Sepsis
- When to determine extra care for patients
The complete sepsis toolkit is published on the website for the Royal College of Physicians.
