ADPKD Status Affects Mortality Rate in Patients on Dialysis

Patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) who are on peritoneal dialysis have a lower mortality risk than patients without ADPKD who are on dialysis, according to a new study.

The results of the study were presented at the National Kidney Foundation’s 2018 Spring Clinical Meetings in April.

To conduct their study, the researchers reviewed 12 observational studies that evaluated the risks of death, technique failure, and peritonitis in patients with ADPKD who were on peritoneal dialysis (n = 931).

Participants were analyzed against a control group of patients without ADPKD who were on peritoneal dialysis (n = 13,742).

Results of the researchers’ analysis showed that patients with ADPKD had a significantly lower mortality risk compared with patients without ADPKD. Risks for technique failure of peritoneal dialysis and peritonitis were not associated with ADPKD.
