Why Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias Increase UTI and Delirium Risk
Urinary tract infection (UTI) is common in older adults and can be especially challenging to recognize in patients with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD), who may have atypical symptoms or be unable to report focal genitourinary complaints. In this population, UTI and delirium can interact with underlying cognitive vulnerability, creating diagnostic and management challenges for clinicians. This quiz reviews why patients with ADRD are at increased risk for UTI and how infection-related inflammation may contribute to UTI-related delirium.
