Study Examines Risk of Stroke in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease

Adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) have a 2-fold greater risk of experiencing an ischemic stroke than the general population, according to the results of a recent study.

For their study, researchers examined data from 10,113 individuals in Danish nationwide registries who were diagnosed with CHD between 1963 and 2012. Ten individuals from the general population were matched to each individual with CHD by sex and birth year (n=97,672).

Stroke risk among adults with CHD was over 2-fold greater than in the general population, and the 30-day stroke mortality was 11% for CHD participants and 9.9% for comparison participants.

Stroke mortality risk was not modified by CHD severity.
