Dairy Intake Raises Risk for Hip Replacements in Some OA Patients

Dairy consumption raises the risk of total hip arthroplasty in men with osteoarthritis (OA), according to a recent study. However, women with OA who consume dairy do not face increased risk.

A total of 38,924 participants who had recorded dairy product consumption between 1990 and 1994 were evaluated in the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. The researchers then determined the incidence of total hip arthroplasty for OA between 2001 and 2013, linking cohort records to the Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry. Mean follow-up was 11.8 years.

The researchers identified 1505 hip arthroplasties for patients with OA, with 524 received by men and 981 received by women.

Results indicated that a 1 standard deviation increase in dairy product consumption among men with OA was associated with a 21% increased incidence of total hip arthroplasty, with a dose-response relationship observed for quartiles of dairy product consumption.

However, the researchers found no significant association between dairy consumption and total hip arthroplasty in women with OA.

According to the researchers, the results were independent of age, body mass index, country of birth, education, smoking status, vigorous physical activity, calcium supplementation, energy consumption, circulating 25-hydroxy vitamin D, hypertension, and diabetes.

“Increasing dairy product consumption was associated with an increased risk of total hip arthroplasty for men with OA, with no significant association observed for women,” the researchers concluded. “Understanding the mechanisms may help identify strategies to prevent hip OA, particularly for men.”
