Top 3 Frequently Asked Questions Primary Care Clinicians Ask About Managing COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, yet its day-to-day management often falls to primary care physicians. Clinicians are tasked not only with optimizing pharmacologic therapy but also with supporting smoking cessation, monitoring disease progression, and addressing uncertainty about treatment and follow-up. Primary care physicians manage the majority of patients with COPD and often encounter recurring questions about inhaler selection, disease progression, and optimal follow-up intervals. This FAQ highlights concise, evidence-based guidance on each—helping clinicians streamline care, reinforce best practices, and improve patient outcomes.

Patients with mild COPD should be seen every 6 to 12 months. Those with moderate to severe disease should have follow-up visits every 3 to 6 months.

After an exacerbation, patients should be evaluated within 4 weeks to assess recovery, reinforce adherence, and adjust management as needed.1
