National Immunization Awareness Month: Advancing Vaccine Protection Across the Lifespan
Vaccination plays a key role in supporting overall health by reducing disease risk and helping the body’s natural defenses develop protection. Vaccines are available to prevent more than 30 life-threatening diseases and infections, and immunization averts an estimated 3.5 million to 5 million deaths annually from illnesses such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, influenza, and measles.1 COVID-19 vaccines also remain an important tool for reducing severe disease and death, particularly among people at increased risk for severe outcomes.

In our latest respiratory roundup, we examined emerging research on influenza and respiratory syncytial virus. The studies included several populations at increased risk of serious illness, including older adults, nursing home residents, pregnant individuals and their infants, and patients with chronic health conditions.2
Scientific advances, however, do not translate into improved health outcomes without clear guidance, reliable access, and public confidence. In a Consultant360 multidisciplinary roundtable examining the September 2025 Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices meeting, vaccine experts Yvonne Maldonado, MD; Arthur Reingold, MD; and William Schaffner, MD, discussed how changes in vaccine policy development could affect clinical practice. These policy discussions underscore clinicians’ central role in immunization. When recommendations are complex or evolving, clinicians can help patients navigate uncertainty by clearly explaining vaccine risks and benefits, addressing misinformation, and reinforcing the evidence supporting established immunization schedules.3
