Ubrogepant Shows Consistent 2-Hour Pain Relief Across Consecutive Migraine Attacks

Key Highlights

  • Ubrogepant 100 mg produced similar 2-hour pain relief rates across the first, second, and third treated migraine attacks.
  • Overall, 74.0% of participants achieved 2-hour pain relief across all 3 consecutive attacks.
  • More than half of initial nonresponders achieved 2-hour pain relief with their second treated attack.

Ubrogepant 100 mg demonstrated consistent 2-hour pain relief across multiple consecutive migraine attacks in a post-hoc analysis of a phase 3, open-label, 52-week long-term extension study presented at the American Headache Society 68th Annual Scientific Meeting in Orlando, FL.

Researchers evaluated eligible participants randomized to ubrogepant 100 mg who had at least 3 treated migraine attacks and a 2-hour pain relief assessment. Pain relief was defined as a reduction in headache severity from moderate or severe at baseline to mild or no headache pain. Consistency was assessed at both the population and individual levels using descriptive statistics.

Study Findings

The modified intent-to-treat population included 361 participants. Most participants achieved 2-hour pain relief after each of the first 3 treated attacks, with rates of 68% after the first, 69% after the second, and 68% after the third.

At the individual level, 74% of participants achieved 2-hour pain relief across all 3 consecutive attacks. Among participants who did not respond to the first treated attack, 58.8% responded to the second. The abstract stated that most participants who achieved 2-hour pain relief in a prior attack also responded in subsequent attacks. According to the study authors, these findings support the reliability of ubrogepant as an acute treatment option for migraine.

Expert Commentary

“Ubrogepant 100 mg demonstrated a consistent effect across multiple, consecutive migraine attacks. Most participants who experienced an initial response with ubrogepant 100 mg treatment continued to respond across multiple attacks,” the researchers concluded.
