Three Studies to Watch at the 2026 AAOMS Annual Meeting

Research scheduled for the 2026 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Annual Meeting will examine clinical questions that reach from the emergency department to the operating room. Six posters selected for Consultant360 coverage will give clinicians an early look at studies involving facial trauma, artificial intelligence (AI), postoperative pain, complex airway management, and predictors of surgical outcomes. The first three posters are previewed below.

Sports-Related Facial Fractures1

A 12-year analysis of the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System will describe US emergency department presentations for sports-related facial fractures. The poster will explore patient age, sex, causative sports, and disposition, with particular attention to injury patterns associated with cycling and ball sports.

AI Accuracy in Maxillofacial Trauma2

A cross-platform comparison will evaluate how four AI models answered simple and complex questions about maxillofacial trauma diagnosis and management. Investigators will also examine whether certainty aligned with accuracy and how default ChatGPT model performance differed across 2 query dates 6 months apart.

Liposomal Bupivacaine After Oral Surgery3

A comparative systematic review will assess liposomal bupivacaine versus standard bupivacaine or no local anesthetic adjunct across oral and maxillofacial procedures. Outcomes of interest include postoperative pain, opioid use, patient satisfaction, hospital length of stay, and whether results differ by procedure type.
