Sessions to Keep on Your Radar at ASBMR 2026
The American Society for Bone & Mineral Research (ASBMR) 2026 Annual Meeting, taking place October 9-12 in Boston, will bring together more than 2500 clinicians and researchers working across bone, mineral, and musculoskeletal science. The program includes nearly 100 educational sessions and about 1000 poster presentations, spanning basic, translational, and clinical research. Topics particularly relevant to those following skeletal dysplasias and rare bone disorders include sessions on disease therapeutics, pediatric skeletal dysplasia, and emerging technologies for bone assessment. The pre-meeting symposium, presented by ASBMR and the Rare Bone Disease Alliance, will bring together patients, academic and industry researchers, and government officials to discuss advances in rare bone disease research and therapeutic developments.
Below are several sessions from the ASBMR 2026 program that may be particularly relevant to those following advances in rare bone disease and skeletal dysplasia.
Translating Mechanisms to Medicine: Advances in Rare Bone Diseases
Rare bone disease research will receive a full day of dedicated programming before the official opening of ASBMR 2026 through the ASBMR/Rare Bone Disease Alliance symposium, “Translating Mechanisms to Medicine: Advances in Rare Bone Diseases.”
The symposium will bring together a diverse group, including patients, academic and industry researchers, and government officials, to discuss the effectiveness and design of rare bone disease therapeutics. The program follows rare-disease research from scientific discovery through therapeutic development, clinical trials, new technologies, regulatory considerations, and patient collaboration.
The opening session will cover advances in rare bone disease therapies across the innovation spectrum, including how infrastructure, capital, and expertise advance rare-disease therapies and how clinical trial design is tailored to rare disorders. Insights on the parathyroid hormone (PTH) pathway, moving from emerging mechanisms to evolving therapeutics, will also be presented and include discussions on molecular, biologic, and delivery innovations in parathyroid hormone (PTH) replacement, new mechanisms and new diagnoses in parathyroid hormone 1 receptor-related disorders, and the evolving understanding of epigenetic disorders in PTH resistance. Faculty will also discuss next-generation tools transforming rare bone disease research, AI-driven strategies for discovering and repurposing therapies in rare diseases, and using patient cells and nodal biology to accelerate precision medicines for genetic disorders.
The final portion of the program broadens the discussion to the partnerships required to advance rare-disease research, and will include insights on regulatory pathways and patient voices, collaboration among patients, innovators, and industry, and registries as engines of discovery.
Advancing Care for Children With Skeletal Dysplasia: Preclinical Models to Emerging Therapies
Among the skeletal dysplasias, achondroplasia is the most common form of inherited disproportionate short stature. Current estimates place its occurrence at approximately 1 in 25,000 to 28,000 live births worldwide. Achondroplasia is classified among the FGFR3-related chondrodysplasias, underscoring the increasingly molecular framework for defining and studying skeletal dysplasias. This industry expert session approaches the topic from across the translational spectrum, from preclinical models through emerging therapeutic approaches.
Next-Generation Technologies for Bone Assessment
New approaches to bone assessment will be featured Friday afternoon at ASBMR 2026. ASBMR’s broader 2026 program places substantial emphasis on advancing methods for evaluating bone and musculoskeletal health. The separate pre-meeting symposium on biological control of bone quality, for example, includes dedicated programming on emerging technologies in bone quality assessment and bone quality diagnostics, reflecting the meeting-wide attention being given to assessment and diagnostic strategies.
Upcoming Research Highlights
In addition to these selected sessions, our upcoming ASBMR 2026 coverage will follow select research presented throughout the meeting, including abstracts and posters addressing skeletal dysplasia, rare bone disorders, skeletal genetics, growth-plate biology, diagnosis, and other areas relevant to advancing understanding of bone and musculoskeletal disease. Coverage will be published as research becomes available in accordance with meeting embargo requirements. Check back for updates in our ASBMR 2026 newsroom here.
