Advancing High-Value Care Through Risk-Based Partnerships
In a breakout session during the America’s Physician Groups (APG) Spring Conference 2025, representatives from the Integrated Healthcare Association, two major payers, and a leading physician group affiliated with APG examined how risk-based payment models support high-value care delivery.
Evidence indicates that physician organizations operating under capitated-delegated arrangements, a payment model where a health plan pays a physician group a fixed monthly amount per patient and gives them responsibility for managing the patient’s care and costs, consistently achieve better outcomes for patients—both in terms of quality and cost.
In this session, entitled How California Physician Organizations In At-Risk Payment Models With Payers Achieve Superior Performance, Bill Barcellona, executive vice president of Government Affairs, APG moderated a discussion that included practical examples and approaches that have led to improved outcomes across commercial insurance, Medicare Advantage, and managed Medicaid populations. The panel discussion also addressed policy developments in California and potential implications for clinical practice nationwide.
