AAOMS 2026 Preview Explores Emergency Care, Surgical Risk

Edited by:

Key Highlights

  • An emergency department analysis will examine the clinical characteristics and resource needs associated with temporomandibular joint dislocation.
  • A retrospective review will describe perioperative strategies for dentoalveolar surgery in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.
  • A cohort study will evaluate whether preoperative red blood cell counts and and hemoglobin levels are associated with medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw severity or surgical outcomes.

Three poster presentations scheduled for the 2026 American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) Annual Meeting will explore challenges in emergency care, surgery for a rare ossification disorder, and preoperative risk assessment. The studies will characterize temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation in the emergency department, describe dentoalveolar surgery in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), and examine whether anemia is associated with the severity or surgical outcomes of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ). The three posters are previewed below.

Temporomandibular Joint Dislocation in Emergency Care1

A retrospective analysis of emergency department encounters will characterize temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dislocation by demographics, mechanism, concomitant mandibular fracture, charges, admission, and interfacility transfer. The study will focus on patterns that may help identify patients with greater resource needs.

Surgical Care in Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva2

An institutional retrospective review will describe dentoalveolar surgery in patients with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), a rare disorder marked by progressive heterotopic ossification. The poster will address airway planning, atraumatic technique, corticosteroid prophylaxis, inflammatory flare-ups, and changes in mouth opening.

Preoperative Anemia and MRONJ Outcomes3

A retrospective cohort study will examine whether red blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels predict the severity of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) or outcomes after surgery. The analysis will consider disease stage, postoperative improvement, and the potential role of anemia in preoperative risk assessment.
