The Role of the Kidney in Cardiometabolic Disease

Sunday, October 16 at 1:35pm

The risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in patients with cardiometabolic syndrome (CMS) is 2.5 times greater than in the general population, and hypertension and obesity are 2 major risk factors for the condition.

Christian W. Mende, MD, FACP, FACN, FASN, FASH, will discuss the association between CKD and CMS in "The Role of the Kidney in Cardiometabolic Disease," on Sunday afternoon.

The session will detail associated comorbidities in these patients and their effects on patient health and disease management, including insulin resistance, hypertension (uncontrolled), microalbuminuria, obesity, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, diabetes mellitus, and nephrolithiasis.

Further, Mende will discuss pharmacologic options for patients with CKD and CMS, including diruetics and alpha and beta blockers for patients with CKD and hypertension, aldactone, ACEI or ARB, and the use of bed-time dosing for patients with diabetes mellitus or CKD.

The session will conclude with the presentation of 2 case studies demonstrating patients that healthcare providers may encounter in everyday practice and how best to assess them for CKD risk and offer treatment.
