Atopic dermatitis (also known as eczema) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that causes inflammation, redness, and irritation of the skin. Although usually beginning in childhood, anyone can get the disease at any age.

Scratching can lead to: redness, swelling, cracking, appearance of clear fluid, crusting, and scaling. Symptoms can flare in multiple body areas at the same time and then go into remission. The appearance and location of the rash can vary depending on age.

Patch testing - Patch testing can help diagnose specific types of allergies causing AD. The physician applies small amounts of different substances to a patient's skin. During the next few days, the physician examines the skin for signs of a reaction.
