Overview

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a preventive medication administered intravenously or orally to reduce the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection that may occur following sex or injection drug use.

Any licensed health care provider is able to prescribe PrEP. Among the health care providers who are most likely to prescribe PrEP are:

At-Risk Populations

Individuals who are at-risk of HIV transmission include:

Individuals who have had anal or vaginal sex in the past 6 months and
- had a parter with HIV
- had sex without consistently using a condom
- have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease in the past 6 months
Individuals who inject drugs, have an injection partner with HIV, or who shares needles, syringes, or other drug injection equipment
Individuals who have previously been prescribed PrEP, have reported continued risk behavior, or previously used multiple courses of PrEP
