Antivirals Currently Underutilized in Children Hospitalized Due to Influenza

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics, recommend all children hospitalized due to influenza infection receive antiviral treatment. Despite this, a recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics revealed antiviral utilization in this pediatric patient population falls significantly short of expectations. They also found that these medications are inconsistently utilized in children with comorbidities that put them at high risk for complications secondary to flu infection.
